The Agora, the name of the ancient markets, is a rectangle place, which dimensions are 80x100 meters. The remnants of the Agora
where found during the excavations between 1948 and 1955. At the north-west, south-west and south-east part, there where arcades,
department stores and depots. The Court and the Basilika where at the north-east side.
Building the Agora was started in the 6th century b.C. and it was finished step by step until the 2nd century b.C. Every building
or memorial was built for each self. Differetn ways and gates guided through the Agora and connected the agora with the city.
The Agora was the culture-, state- and tradingcenter of the ancient town Limenas. It was a famous meeting and trading point for
the business men and traders.
Up to now you will find remnants of the altar of Theogenis, which probably was built in the 2nd century b.C. The size of
the Basilika is about 23 Meter. It was built in the 4th century b.C.
The Excavation place of the ancient market is opened to get explored by the tourists for free. Make a journey in the ancient Thassos
and follow the way through old ruins in the past.
