The theater was built in the 5th century B.C. It offerd place for 2000-3000 visitors- The theater is on the northern side of the city Limenas. The forestage was bulit in the 3rd century B.C. by Lysistratos from Thassos. It was dedicated to the God Donysos. In the first century A.C. the Romans built their arena onto the Greek theater and used it for gladiator competitions.

The difference between the Greek and roman theater was, that the Greeks used quadratic dies and the Romans oblong stone ashlar as seats. The theater got many modifications, only the forestage remained always like it was. Today the theater is used in the summer for Open-Air of concerts and performances of tragedies.
